A Firecracker July 4th Week

July 8, 2011 by Lisa Leave a Comment

It’s been a firecracker July 4th week around here. My family and I have been from one event to another since last Friday. Not to worry, all will be showing up on A Daily Pinch in the next week, but I do believe I’m to the point I’m a little overwhelmed and need a short break.

When you’re a professional blogger, you never really have a day off. I always have my Flip cam and trusty camera on me, as well as a notebook. You never know when you’re going to run across something to share. I’ve also had some female issues and my hormones are way out of whack. As a woman trying to do it all, let’s just say when you get to this point, you feel as if you’re flailing your arms wildly, expecting a big gust of wind to pick you up and help float you along.

Tomorrow, I’m going to sit on the beach and take pictures. Turn my cell phone off and not worry about life for a little while. I need to find some balance and this will be the best way. Surf, sun and sand. My true balancers.

I won’t leave you hanging, but tempt you with what’s coming after my self-imposed hiatus.

  • Stomp, Chomp and Roll Cookie Contest
  • Cirque du Soleil was at the NASCAR Hall of Fame this week. Can’t wait to show off the pics of the performance.
  • Cirque du Soleil’s Alegria coming to Charlotte! I did a sneak preview in Raleigh Wednesday night and can’t wait to share posts, video and images. There might even be some fun giveaways coming!
  • Jamestown in Charlotte? That’s right. It’s coming to the history museum.

Asheville, Social Media, Blogging and Type-A Mom’s

September 27, 2010 by Lisa Leave a Comment

I don’t have a lot to say this morning. Which on any normal day would make people stare at me like I have two heads. Today is just not a day for talking or writing. Instead, I am going to spend my day reading notes and recapping events of the last four days at the Type-A Mom Conferencein Asheville, NC. My weekend was an amazing time spent with 350 fantastic women, all different, yet all with one common goal. To be the best bloggers we can be.

While I could sit here and give you a full recap, what I really need to do is have some downtime. Napping would have fantastic. However, I will be typing up my notes, sending a lot of emails, getting media kits ready to mail out and working on my calendar. Also, to give a full recap wouldn’t be fair when I haven’t had time to process it all.

So for now, I am home working and pondering the best way to give you the experience that was Type-A Mom 2010. In the words of the Grateful Dead, “What a long strange trip it’s been.”

Let’s Dance: Gold’s Gym Dance Workout for Wii Review & Giveaway!

August 23, 2010 by Lisa 23 Comments

I was recently contacted by Ubisoftand the Clever Girls Collective to be one of their “Ubisoft Champions” and participate in their social media program. We are huge fans of Ubisoft games in our house and I felt it was a good fit. I game to not only blow off steam, but to spend extra time with my ten-year old son. His friends think I am the “cool” mom! Which is especially helpful when dealing with a bunch of pre-pubescent tweens.

When I received my package in the mail, I was thrilled to find Gold’s Gym Dance Workout for Wii. I am working on getting into better shape and after having danced various mediums for 13 years, this was a win in my book. Starting off was pretty easy as the game collects basic information from you (height, weight, age) and then takes you through some basic steps in a tutorial. While coordination is needed, it’s pretty easy the second time you practice. You just have to remember to look for the hints to change you moves, which are displayed clearly.

After that, I was able to select a personal trainer and then set up an ongoing program for myself. Fun. I picked the “Exercise is Fun” option, which included Merengue and a matador type game where I used my hips to avoid the bull! Let’s just say, I am going to need some work on that part, as I was knocked senseless by the bull on multiple occasions! My son has been playing the boxing fitness portion and loved it. When done, he decided that he need to lay down on the den floor and take a break. Part of his problem during the boxing inspired dance routines was not being able to stay in time with the rhythm. If you can, imagine Speedy Gonzalez playing Frank Sinatra and trying to dance.

Music is always key to my happiness when I am exercising; and Gold’s Gym Dance Workout includes some of my favorites by Madonna, Gloria Gaynor, the Beach Boys, Blondie and Santana. Plus, the mini-games that target specific muscle groups? Fantastic. They also do a quick warm up and cool down during each set of workouts to help prevent injuries?

Are their any cons? Not really. It takes a little coordination and repeating some of the moves a few times, but that is normal with any dance or exercise class. The only other thing? I would love it if the trainers actually spoke to you like they do on the Wii Fit games, however that is of very little concern to me. The fact that it gets me exercising and moving is the biggest boon of of Gold’s Gym Dance Workout.

Now the fun part. Ubisoftis providing a copy of Gold’s Gym Dance Workout for Wiito giveaway! I can feel the salsa dancing in spirit already. However, to be entered, I need you to do a few things.

Here’s how to enter:

I like to make it easy.

  1. Follow me on Twitter.
  2. Like A Daily Pinch on Facebook.
  3. Follow Ubisoft on Twitter.
  4. Leave us a comment when you’ve done that and tell me you’ve done any of the above!

That’s it!

WINNER will be randomly drawn from all entries and ANNOUNCED on MONDAY, AUGUST 30TH. Good luck!

I was selected by Ubisoftand Clever Girls Collective to be part of the Ubisoft Champions social media program. I am compensated for my participation in this program, but my reviews are solely my own and represent my honest opinions. Ubisoftand the Clever Girls Collective promote Blog With Integrity.

When Bloggers Go Too Far.

August 12, 2010 by Lisa 1 Comment

Bloggers are looked at in many different ways. “Warily” seems to come to mind on many occasions. We are the “new media”. Whatever. Potato, po-tah-to. I have written on several different occasions regarding blogging and the necessity of journalistic integrity. Well, buckle your seatbelts, the circle is coming around again.

I had a friend post a picture on Twitter last week. The package he received had a tear sheet full of info and a cellophane bag (which broke in shipment) of dried food items. Of course, when he opened the package, it spilled out onto his desk.

Yeah, I might have giggled just a little. Sorry, D.

However, all laughs aside, this is about using marketing standards written about in textbooks that are more than a decade old. Maybe it’s still standard. I don’t know. What I do know, is that someone didn’t do their research. It doesn’t matter who you are sending your PR Kit/Press Release to, it’s essential that it is sent to the proper person. Just because a journalist is on Twitter, and a very engaging personality, doesn’t mean that what you offer is within their scope. If it’s not, the package you just sent becomes a Twitpic and the very people you want to get in touch are going to look at you like you’re a leper.

Could it be that I have read the Writer’s Market guidelines for publishing houses and agents enough that I know all they need is a strongly worded query? Or am I mistaken? Send me a strong email that gets my attention and sell me. Because frankly, I don’t have the space to store your gimmicks.

Don’t shoot yourself in the foot like that. Gimmicks don’t cut it. It’s not worthy of you; and we suffer from the very public, very negative light that has been shed on the rest of us.
