School is back in today after two weeks off for the Christmas holidays, or the more politically correct terminology “Winter Break.” This means I’m not sitting at my laptop writing this piece, but I’m sitting in a coffee shop with my best friend trying to get enough liquid stimulant a/k/a coffee flowing through my veins to keep me going.
I’m a night owl by nature and my muse likes to kick in from 11pm until 3am. That’s just how it works. I’ve alway been this way and at 42, am pretty sure it’s not going to change. After discussing this with my husband, I’m going to adjust my sleep schedule after The Kid goes off to college (3.5 years) in order to embrace my muse and allow her to work when she’s happy.
Sure, I’ll be up late and sleeping until 10am when most sane people are up and about, but I’ll be more productive with my creative writing/fiction.
I’m sure medical science has an enormous selection of data on why this is bad for my health. But this isn’t about some perfect routine during the day suiting the needs of others. I need to suit my needs and stop stifling my creativity.
That being said, I’m at that age where internal clocks start to change and it’s quite possible I’ll turn into one those folks who eats dinner at 2pm, is in bed at 6pm and up at 3am. Until then, I will do what every is necessary to honor my inner muse. Pass the coffee.
