On Tuesday, I had the distinct pleasure of going to the grand opening of the Dress For Success Boutique and Career Transformation Center. They have a unique mission in our community, which is to empower disadvantaged women to gain economic independence by providing professional attire, career development tools and a network of support.
A large majority of the women are single mothers (~70%) who are raising 2-3 children. The women range in age between 18 and 60, with the majority ranging from 18 to 38 years old. They also represent a cross-section of races and ethnicities in the Charlotte area.
Dress For Success operates apparel drives in the area that provide the clothing their clients need for job interviews, as well as outfits for their first week on the job. The clients also receive an invitation to join the Professional Women’s Group, which provides support and practical information to allow women to move forward with their lives and break the vicious cycle of poverty in the process. Dress For Success Worldwide (Dress For Success Charlotte is a 501(c)-3 affiliate of Dress For Success Worldwide) received Charity Navigator’s four-star rating (its highest rating) based on the organization’s efficiency and its capacity to provide its programs and services over time.
This charity is a great idea. With the economy putting families under stress across the region and across the country, there is little doubt in my mind this is a timely service for the community. It will take a lot of hard work from dedicated volunteers to keep things running smoothly. From outfitting clients to running workshops and fundraising, there will be plenty of ways for folks to get involved.
I went with a friend of mine, who is a single mother of 2. She has a full-time job, but she could easily identify with the mission of Dress For Success. She and I are making plans to volunteer, and see how we can help make a difference in the community.
