17 Spooky Songs For Your Halloween Playlist

September 10, 2017 by Lisa Leave a Comment

17 Songs for Your Halloween Playlist

I love Halloween, but I don’t like to be scared, which is why horror movies are out and cute spooky things are in. I started decorating my house for autumn and Halloween and was thinking about what my Halloween playlist would sound like. I’m not into sound effects featuring creaky doors, screams, and eerie winds whooshing by, so I opted for a soundtrack that fits my mood, and would also work with a house full of guests. Some of the song are fun sing-a-longs, whereas others have a much heavier rock and roll vibe.

Spooky Songs You'll Definitely Want to Listen to on Halloween

One of my favorite songs that was in heavy rotation growing up was the Purple People Eater by Sheb Wooley. If you’re of a certain age, you also remember this fondly from Dr. Demento’s radio show! Luckily, and old clip from 1958 has surfaced on YouTube and I can share it here.

Next up is Black Sabbath’s Paranoid. I love this song and when I used to run long distances, this was at the end of my mix-tape (the 80’s ruled that way) and helped power me through to the end. It’s a great Halloween song as well, especially if you watch the video which is steeped in the Psychedelic theme of that time.

What’s better than Stevie Wonder singing Superstition on Halloween? A video of Stevie and his band performing the same song on Sesame Street!

Who you gonna call? A Halloween playlist wouldn’t be complete without Ray Parker, Jr.’s Ghostbusters! I ain’t afraid of no ghost.

Horror movie master and rock start Rob Zombie’s Living Dead Girl video is the perfect take on 1920’s silent horror movies. The song is the perfect addition to my Halloween playlist.

The Misfits Halloween is another great tune that embodies the season with lyrics “bonfires burning bright pumpkin faces in the night.” This video from Riot Fest in Denver is much more high tech than any Misfits performance I saw when I was younger.

The Cranberries Dolores O’Riordan put her angelic voice through the paces to growl out Zombie on the song of the same name. Originally written as a protest song in memory of two boys killed in an IRA bombing, the grungy, guttural sounds make it perfect for my Halloween playlist.

Darkness falls across the land, The midnight hour is close at hand.. What Halloween playlist would be complete without the addition of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. This is one of the first albums I ever bought on my own (on vinyl!) and the addition of Vincent Price was perfect accompaniment, especially his spooky laugh at the end.

Rockwell’s Somebody’s Watching Me featured Michael Jackson on backing vocals and brings out the paranoia we all have at times. The video has haunted house-inspired imagery featuring floating heads, ravens, graveyards. The shower scenes references the Hitchcock suspense classic Psycho.

Lighten your playlist up with Bobby Pickett’s Monster Mash. This clip comes from the October 13, 1964, American Bandstand where Pickett does his best Frankenstein imitation. (It also proves that Dick Clarke never did age.)

The Talking Heads Psycho Killer makes me want to dance and sing.

Aaoooooo! Warren Zevon’s Werewolves of London is fun and creepy at the same time. He studied modern classical music under Igor Stravinsky, which shows itself in all of his music. When I listen to this song, I like to imagine a werewolf walking through London’s Mayfair and a tailored suit from a shop on Savile Row.

Savatage is one of the 80’s bands I love. Friends, you probably love them as their modern day incarnation of Trans Siberian Orchestra. Hall of the Mountain king is Tolkien-esque which makes it perfect for Halloween.

“It’s just a jump to the left. And then a step to the right. With your hand on your hips. You bring your knees in tight.” I’d be remiss to leave out Time Warp from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Riff-Raff and Magenta would certainly approve.

Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones is a history lesson in horror. Enjoy a much younger Rolling Stones perform this live version.

A young Creedence Clearwater Revival sang about a Bad Moon Rising. With lyrics like”Don’t go around tonight, Well, it’s bound to take your life, There’s a bad moon on the rise” make it perfect for any Halloween playlist.

I’ll finish off this playlist with Blue Oyster Cult’s Don’t Fear the Reaper.” And yes, friends, Halloween playlists always need more cowbell. Always.

I hope this playlist brought some toe-tapping fun to your Halloween. If you want more spooky songs, check out my Spotify Halloween Party playlist.

Halloween — It’s that time of year again!

Ravens Perch

Autumn is my favorite time of year and Halloween ranks high on my list of favorite holidays as my birthday is only two days before. I don’t like horror movies or haunted houses but do love garlic. I realize all of this is such a contradiction, but there is just something about autumn rolling in and little ghosts and goblins showing up at my door.

Spooky Halloween Walkway

One of my favorite memories of trick or treating when I was a little girl was my late Grandmother taking me to my Great-Aunt and Uncles where they would have homemade caramel apples. Those were great days. My husband really doesn’t get my holiday enthusiasm, but our son does. We always put out a few decorations for Halloween and make things like Slime Soup and Mummy Dogs. Until this year, we’ve always trick-or-treated, but at 13 he’s staying home and will be passing out the good treats (chocolate) to the little kids and the bad treats (hard candy) to the kids who are older than him.

Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite Halloween decorations. They’re colorful and adorably spooky. (Clicking on each photo takes you back to the original Pinterest pin!)

‘Tis the Season….For Insanity

November 8, 2009 by Lisa Leave a Comment

I love Christmas. Let it be known now. I do. The lights, the smells, the mad rush to get it all together and spend a couple of terse hours with loved ones wondering if they are going to love your presents as much as you hoped and dreamed only to crush said dreams with a half smile that is obviously fake.

Why I am referencing “insanity” in the title of this blog post? There are several reasons. Probably more than several. Christmas is so commercialized these days. We barely celebrate Independence Day and if you are in the right store, you will find goodies put out to spread holiday cheer. What a better way to say “I feel so accomplished” than starting your Christmas shopping in July?

I was in Target today and right beside aisles of Christmas decorations, there was a whole section of Halloween goodies on clearance. I never saw anything that said “Give Thanks” in reference to the Pilgrimswho valiantly came to these shores in order to escape religious persecution and helped found this great land I call my country and home.

Have we forgotten Thanksgivingentirely?

I know that it hasn’t been, but I have wondered if it is just an afterthought. That time of year that signals the mad rush to finalize your Christmas purchases.

Sorry if I sound so cranky. But, what happened to enjoying the Season? Spending time with family? Not going to the mall when it opens on midnight on Black Friday to push and shove your way to a harried frenzy only to grab the latest and greatest toy? I just don’t do it. It’s not worth it.

So here I am, trying to get ideas for the upcoming holidays. I know I should be coming up with this stuff, because, well, it seems to be what people want. My husband gets incredulous at hearing this, blathers for a few minutes (or a few days – he could either filibuster a piece of legislation or he should’ve tried out as Raymond in “Rain Man”) about how all of this holiday promotion shows how our holidays have no soul left, and that since people in this country are horrible at math and science, we’ve lost all ability to reason.

But all of his rambling does very little in the grand scheme of things. Targets, Gaps, Home Depots, and the malls are still going to put out holiday displays even though Halloween merchandise is still on the shelves and given what my blog covers, I still have to cover these things. But it’s hard to find inspiration when all you want to see and do is this:

Ugh: That’s it. Just ugh.

November 3, 2009 by Lisa Leave a Comment

I have been swamped, covered, run-over, over scheduled. You name it, I can lay claim to it. Meaning I didn’t finish my Halloween Food Series and just want to cry! I still have the makings for clumping together my blood clots and pus in the fridge. Just ready to be put in a dessert glass. My pumpkin wine cooler? Still sitting, uncarved.

Where has the time gone? Non-profit work, volunteering, PTA fundraising, anything and everything that has nothing to do with A Daily Pinch. I am also in the middle of a designing a new site for a complete rebuild. That is covered with the mundane tasks of pondering how many action items should I have, how many columns do I want, what do my readers prefer, do I keep the same color scheme…I tell you, it’s enough to drive a girl to the coffee pot too many times in one day.

Personally, I am taking a working break this week. I am leaving the family at home and heading to a cottage at the beach to property sit for a friend and going to create content and sketch out my plans. After that? Business plan work. I want Daily Pinch to be a full-time job in six months.

On a more fun note, I was just hired at the Charlotte Editor for www.SavvySource.com! I will be handling and updating content for the Charlotte area pre-k crowd.

So, please forgive me for my slacker behavior. I don’t like it, but procrastination and disorganization LOVE me. Seriously. They just gush about me.
