Wanderlust

I was born with a serious case of wanderlust that grows stronger the older I get. To help plan my travels or just day dream about exotic locations, I head over to Pinterest and pin away. If you follow me on Pinterest, you’ll know I spend a lot of time pinning travel. (And coffee. Let’s give one up for transparency on that end.)

I’m sharing some of my travel boards today to inspire your own sense of adventure. I also have questions. Where do you like to travel? Do you have a travel list you’re working on? What has been your favorite trip?

Seeing adventures through the eyes of others is a joy. I know great travel. Every trip is great, but there are experiences I could stand to forget. The Italian mothers following me to my room for their sons was a little unnerving. There have also been a few flights I’d like to forget. Driving in certain cities still gives me flashbacks worthy of a Stephen King novel.

Traveling and exploring the unknown is what you make of it. I prefer to go off the beaten path, while others prefer the tried and true. There are also times I prefer to keep myself on the straight and narrow, visiting all the spots every guide book that has ever been printed says you should visit.

As I work on travel plans for the rest of the rear and into next, I wanted to share a few of the places I find inspiration on Pinterest. This is where I gather ideas, fuel my wanderlust and strategically map where I want to travel. Of course, I also just Pin pretty pictures that inspire me as well.

Cold Weather Helpers

Baby, it’s cold. Really cold. It seems like the entire country is gripped in bitter cold that’s not been seen in decades. While sitting here tonight, sipping my omnipresent cup of coffee, I decided to remove the post I scheduled weeks ago and share some cold weather helpers to warm you up.

First, I’m going to take time out of my day to travel — virtually. We’re headed to the Maldives. Personally, I can’t think of anything better than blue water, white sand and a hut beckoning us to sip fruity cocktails, build sand castles and lounge in the warmth of the sun.

If you’re not up for travel, why not stay at home and warm yourself with a jolly good Irish Coffee. It’s got so many things I love in one glass. Coffee, Irish Whiskey (I prefer Jameson) and whipped cream.

Irish Coffee not your cup of tea? Settle in with a cup of hot chocolate topped with real marshmallows. If you want to make it extra sweet, finish off the leftover peppermint bark, and don’t worry about those New Year Resolutions.

Have a fireplace? Pull on your woolen socks, cozy up to your love and enjoy the crackling of the logs, warm toes and a quiet evening.

Curling up in bed is a good thing when it’s bitterly cold out. It’s just you, your covers and hopefully a good book.

Now to get serious for a moment. No matter what you’re doing, please take care during these bitterly cold temperatures. Take every precaution when traveling, let your cold water drip overnight, make sure the vents are closed under the house, and bring in any pets. Dress in layers if you have to go out and make sure you have a fully charged mobile phone. Safety during this type of weather is of the utmost importance.

Decorating Conundrums: Bedroom Design and Decor

I’m pretty tired of our bedroom. We’ve had the same comforter for longer than I care to admit, and neither of us love our heaboard and footboard. While my husband would be content with me whipping out the plastic and ordering an entire Westin hotel room, I need a little more. Okay, okay, I need a lot more. Luckily for us, and our continued boudoir harmony, I set up a Pinterest board so we could each pin bedroom decor we both like. (Such a modern marriage.)


First, I’ll start with one he’s selected. The Light Bed from Roche Bobois. When we were dating, and not long before we were engaged, he mentioned how much he loved their furniture and wanted to do the entire house there. I’m pretty sure I responded “Is that a pastry?” Needless to say, I was quickly brought up to speed. While I do love the clean, aesthetic lines of modern design, I hedge over the bedroom being almost sterile.

He’s also selected a lovely bedroom, that is quite nautical. He prefers to replace the 4 poster bed with the aforementioned Light Bed, or any other incarnation of sleek industrial steel. Had he said “sleigh bed,” I’m pretty sure I could get behind this logic. (Ed note. He’ll never, ever say he wants a sleigh bed. We think he’s morally opposed to them.)

Me? I like a little color and whimsy. I’m pushing to brighten things up. Some vibrant colors, mixed with contemporary lines are more my style. I’m always looking for that something that makes me want to stay in bed with a book all day.


I can get behind incorporating some of the ascetic hotel look he adores, however it must be carefully incorporated, or else I’ll not feel like my Sunday mornings, sitting in bed, sipping coffee, and reading the Times are ours. I know he wants his own version of the Palm Spings, mid-century modern cocktail party chic style in every room, but this is where we have to find ways to compromise.

Honey, if you’re reading, I’ll give on the bedroom decor, if you’ll go for the navy walls, glossy white trim and hot pink sofa in our living room.

Sweet Treats

Call it a sweet tooth. Call it PMS. Call it anything you want, but I’m calling it nummy goodness which is taunting me from my Pinterest boards. I know what everyone is going to say about sweet treats. I’ve read the articles, have heard it from the doctors, etc., but sometimes there’s nothing like sinking your teeth into a delightful confection of temptation. We’ve just got to take it in moderation. Too much of anything is never a good thing.


How long can  I wax poetically about sweet treats? I’ve traveled to a lot of places, and I’ll be quite honest with you, always try something new when I’m there. My favorites, of course, are Macarons. However, I’m also a Southern gal who loves her Grandma’s poundcake and Mom always makes a red velvet cake for my birthday. I’m also a baker. The good thing about my baking is I have no real desire to eat what I’m baking. I’ll have a slice, but that’s it. I prefer the act of baking for people I love to be much more satisfactory than the actual act of eating the goodies I’ve whipped up via kitchen chemistry.

In all honesty? I cook from European cookbooks. I prefer desserts with less sugar. If they are too sweet, I can’t eat them. It’s not that they are bad, but they overwhelm my palate and I can’t enjoy the flavors. When I was younger, I’d have laughed at that statement, but the older I get, the more convinced I am that we’re overwhelming our taste buds with a layer of sugar and have lost some of our true culinary skill.

Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite sweet treat pins. Items that have made my list for the coming year that I’ll test in my own kitchen and enjoy with my family and friends.

Cookie Snobbery and the Macaron

I’m a cookie snob. This snobbery started when I was 15 and went to Paris. Ahhh, Paree… she taught me many things. How to order my coffee “un café crème, s’il vous plait,”, among other things, and introduced me to the delightful macaron. This sweet, airy, meringue-based confection is always beautifully colored and filled with either ganache, buttercream or jam filing. The perfect macaron has a slightly shiny thin shell with a slight crunch and melts in the mouth.

A macaron is not a macaroon.

What? You might here them pronounced macaroon, but a macaroon is also a meringue-based, but coconut topped and denser. It’s a tease when I read a sign that says macaron and it’s really a macaroon. While I enjoy a good macaroon on occasion, the macaron has my heart and has for nearly 25 years.

My husband travels to New York City occasionally for work and when he’s there, he brings me back one thing: Macarons. He doesn’t bring back just any macarons. He either goes to Laduree or La Maison du Chocolate and brings home a small box of six macarons. They are baked every day by pastry chefs trained at their ateliers in France.

Every day, for six days, I brew a cup of tea in my favorite cup, sit down at the table and have one macaron. I take time to inhale its delicate aroma, take in the beautiful colors, and then nibble one tiny bite at a time, savoring every single morsel, letting the flavors swirl over my tongue. It’s a sensory experience created with formality and ritual.
