Coffee Cup Love

August 29, 2017 by Lisa Leave a Comment

Coffee mug love.

My love of coffee is well-known. Some call it an obsession, and they’re probably right. I love nothing more than a cup of freshly-brewed, dark-roast coffee, gently laced with icy-cold, creamy half and half. My husband drinks coffee of the Beastie Boys variety — sugar served up with his coffee and cream in a 24oz mug. It’s like he’s prepping to cross the Sahara, but instead of storing water, he’s storing sugar and cream in his two humps. (His descriptor, not mine!)

There’s also my collection of coffee mugs. It’s.. sizeable. So sizeable, they take up two of the shelves in one kitchen cabinet over my coffee bar. Coffee bar? Yes, but that’s a story for another day.

I’m sharing a few of my favorites below. Some I own, some I am coveting, knowing that before I add to my current collection I will need to part with a few. Thankfully, my husband doesn’t realize a few of his mega-cups are in a box in the garage…

Celebrating National Coffee Day 2016

September 29, 2016 by Lisa Leave a Comment

National Coffee Day is the SuperBowl for coffee lovers
This blog post contains affiliate links.

Today is National Coffee Day. I’m not sure how I forgot the date of my favorite national holiday, but I did and I’m drowning my sorrows in a fresh cup. If you been reading for some time, you know that I have waxed poetically about the virtues of coffee over the years — from how to brew the best cup to imagining what people are thinking when they’re in a coffee shop.

National Coffee Day is the SuperBowl for coffee lovers

So what does a coffee addict lover like myself do on National Coffee Day? Drink coffee. I’ve been tempted to stand at my coffee bar (I AM one of those people) and not move today. Instead, I’ll share what you’ll find if you were to come visit and want to make your own coffee. Get ready for the jitters!

Large national chains are getting in on the coffee action today, with Dunkin’ Donuts offering their medium-sized cup of coffee for .66 cents. Krispy Kreme is giving patrons a free cup of coffee AND a donut. (After all, coffee and donuts do go oh-so-very-well together.) My friends in the Northeast can stop in Wawa for a free coffee at any time today. For every cup of Mexico Chiapas coffee Starbucks sells today, the company will donate one rust-resistant (a fungus) coffee tree. As for me, I’ll be visiting my favorite local coffee shop(s) later today to show a little love on National Coffee Day and fuel myself up in-between errands.

My Coffee Tools

There are days I’m pretty sure I like my Moccamaster coffee maker more than my husband. He understands my reasons for this and I’m pretty sure there are days he likes our coffee maker more than he likes me as well. It was an investment, but it’s a workhorse that brews a fine cup and that’s why we own it.

You can’t make a great pot of coffee without a burr grinder. Fresh ground coffee truly makes my world go-round. I use a Bodum Burr Grinder that is a sturdy companion and allows me to select the grind for each method of coffee I might choose to brew with. In fact, I’m an unabashed Bodum fan, so you’ll see several more items of theirs that I own and use in my search for coffee nirvana.

I’m also a fan of the Bodum pour oversystem. I know, I know, it’s not a Chemex. That doesn’t matter, I love Bodum’s quality and that I don’t have to worry about the wood on the neck of the Chemex being damaged due to exposure to water. The heat resistant silicone grip around the neck saves my fingers from burns as well as slips.

Good design doesn’t have to be expensive, and neither is my 5 year old Bodum Brazil French Press. It gets used almost daily — when I need that one extra cup of coffee quickly.

I use an electric kettle to boil water for my pour over and French press and have used a Breville daily for the last 5 years.

If I’m in the mood for an espresso, I don’t use a fancy machine. I turn on my cooktop and make it the way an Italian grandmother would, with a Bialetti Moka espresso maker. This is how I make my evening coffee and it is a soothing ritual that helps me wind down after a long day.

What are some of my favorite coffees? You can’t go wrong with Illy coffee. I don’t drink it daily, but do keep it on hand for special occasions, or when it’s going to be a difficult week and I want a special treat.

What is your favorite coffee? Not that I need any encouragement, but if I’m going to over share my coffee love, I don’t want to feel left out.

Charlotte’s Pure Intentions Coffee Introduces New Cold Brew

June 1, 2016 by Lisa Leave a Comment

Pure Intentions Coffee Charlotte
Local Charlotte coffee roaster, Pure Intentions Coffee, has released a limited edition rum barrel-aged cold brew for the summer. I’m a coffee purist who has never been into col-brew coffee, but have been working to develop an appreciation for the unique nuances and flavors the cold brew coffee method brings to my palate. This rum barrel-aged brew was crafted with PIC’s Organic Guatemala Acatenango dark roast processed and aged in a rum barrel from Belmont-based Muddy Rivery Distillery.

Cold brew coffee from Pure Intentions Coffee in Charlotte, NC

Coffee beans are very sensitive and will quickly pick up the flavors of that they’re stored or transported in. If you transport and store green coffee beans in burlap for an extended period of time, it will pick up the flavor of burlap. If they’re exposed diesel fumes, they will pick up up and present the flavors of the diesel. (Appetizing, I know.)

Roasters will use a method called “barrel-conditioning” which harkens back to the days when coffee beans were transported in whatever barrels the exporters had on hand. This gave the green coffee beans different nuances of flavor based on the type of barrel they were packed in. These brews are supercharged with flavors that are as complex as the most complicated wines.

Pure Intentions Owner Matt Yarmey took this idea of barrel-conditioning a step further. Instead of using green coffee beans in Muddy River Distillery barrels, he started with beans that had been roasted and cold-brewed. The 6-month planning process for the brew concluded with a 2 month, 10 day aging process, managed by Free Range Brewing  in Charlotte’s NoDa district. The final product offers flavors of oak, molasses and vanilla, without a measurable amount of alcohol content.

“Innovation is at the cornerstone of our business. This is a new experiment; most aged cold brews are aged as green beans then brewed. We’ve aged our cold brew as a liquid to see what variations occur. I enjoy testing the unpredictable.”

Where To Find Pure Intentions Cold Brew

Look for the new cold brew on tap at Free Range Brewing, Bottled and Tapped (Cornelius), and other Pure Intentions draft locations; the coffee will also be used in cocktail creations at Soul Gastrolounge (Plaza Midwood).

Vintage Roaster at Small Town Coffee Roasters, Rutherfordton, NC

When I make it back to my old stomping grounds, I like to stop in and frequent local businesses, giving them the love they deserve in a county with severe economic woes. Yesterday, I stopped in at Small Town Coffee Roasters located in the hamlet of Rutherfordton, NC, in order to pick up a cup of their magical elixir. This was much needed little liquid refreshment for my two hour drive home.

I had heard great things about this shop from raconteur and attorney, Chris Callahan, and knew that if he said it was good, it was a place to add to my list. Small Town Coffee Roasters was definitely worth my stop. I’ll be heading back soon to learn more about this little shop, sample more of their caffeinated wares, and, hopefully, hang out with Monte as he roasts green coffee beans to glistening perfection in a vintage Royal #1.

If you stop in, ask for an El Tim. Drink two. Leave with a delicate caffeine buzz you’ll wish never ends.

Seattle’s Best House Blend Coffee — Finding #GreatTaste {Taste Test}

June 22, 2014 by Lisa Leave a Comment

Morning ritual of pouring cream into coffee

If you’ve been a reader here for any time, or follow me on Twitteror Pinterest, you’ll know all about my love of coffee. Not just any coffee, good coffee, preferably swirled with half and half to create a luscious dark blonde color. I wake up and fill my home with the warm smell and am instantly energized. While it was a no-brainer when Seattle’s Best reached out to me and asked if I would like to try the new Seattle’s Best House Blend, I was also cautious.

Morning ritual of pouring cream into coffee

Taste-testing a medium roast coffee made to be sold in grocery stores and suit a wide range of palates is a challenging prospect. As a self-proclaimed coffee aficionado, I’ve developed certain affinity for what I like in coffee. The deeper, darker the roast the better. I’m also not fond of quite a few regions of coffee — mainly because of some of the flavors they bring to the cup which I personally find unappealing.

I’m always up for a challenge, so I popped in at Publix, where Seattle’s Best is now available, and picked up a few bags (ok, 4) where it was on sale for the sweet price of $4.99 thru July 4, 2014. The k-cups was also on special for $5.99 so I picked a few of those up as well.

For the purposes of testing, I left off the half and half and did a traditional cupping at home to really test the coffee they’d sent me to purchase. The key things I was looking for are what you look for in any coffee:

Aroma:

  • Animal-like
  • Ashy
  • Burnt/Smoky
  • Chemical/Medicinal
  • Chocolate like
  • Caramel
  • Cereal/Malted/Toast-like
  • Earthy
  • Floral
  • Fruity/Citrus
  • Grass/Green/Herbal
  • Nutty
  • Rancid/Rotten
  • Rubber like
  • Spicy
  • Tobacco
  • Winey
  • Woody

Tastes:

  • Acidity
  • Bitterness
  • Sweetness
  • Saltiness
  • Sourness

Mouthfeel:

  • Body
  • Astringency

I made Seattle’s Best House Blend coffee as a pour-over and a French Press to taste test properly. However, for the sake of the everyday coffee consumer, I brewed a pot with traditional brewing methods (2 tablespoons to every 6 ounces of cold water) in my drip coffee maker — a Cuisinart with a thermal carafe — the results of which I’m sharing here. Finally, I made their cold brew method (recipe below) to create a proper iced coffee at home. None of these tests was done with any sweetener or cream, just pure coffee. Seattle's Best Coffee

Aroma: The aromas I picked up on, along with my husband, were:

  • Chocolate like — This wasn’t a sweet chocolate taste, but something akin to a 70% cocao flavor
  • Caramel — Light
  • Fruity/Citrus — I picked up grapefruit, but a more experienced taster would know for sure
  • Grassy
  • Winey
  • Woody – I’m wanting to say this was somewhat oakey. It reminds me of good bourbon that contains a higher rye content.

Tastes:

  • Acidity — The Seattle’s Best House Blend is well balanced coffee with good acidity on the tongue. It doesn’t leave a sour taste, key to a well-balanced coffee.
  • Bitterness — Light bitterness is apparent, but that’s not a bad thing. If it were an overwhelming bitterness, I wouldn’t have been able to drink this coffee as I’m very sensitive to bitter.
  • Sweetness — I didn’t find any off-flavors in this coffee, which allowed the sweet flavors (chocolate/caramel/fruit) to shine.
  • Saltiness — Normal coffee drinkers won’t look for salt. I do, but this is almost a sea salt taste.
  • Sourness — People often confuse sourness with acidity. There was no sourness in this coffee, just great acidity.

Mouthfeel:

  • Body — Seattle’s Best House Blend has a great body. I let the coffee sit on my tongue and roll around in my mouth. It was bold, robust, satisfying.
  • Astringency — None. Astringent coffees leave undesirable after-taste consisting of a dry feeling on the tongue when you’re done drinking them. The Seattle’s Best House Blend left a pleasant flavor

Take-Away:

Seattle’s Best House Blend coffee was consistent across all tastings. Some of the methods I used for brewing intensified the flavors, making a much more robust cup. While I will still be drinking my darker roasts, Seattle’s Best House Blend is definitely a coffee I’m going to recommend to my mother, family and friends. (My mother in particular, as she’s happy with her brand, which I find personally find intolerable. Hi Mom!)

The only con for me in this whole experience is the actual grind of the beans. I prefer to grind my own beans in a burr grinder, and the grind is too fine to do a truly great French Press. This won’t stop me from keeping a bag of Seattle’s Best House Blend on hand for visitors who like a milder coffee for their morning cup. (Seriously.)

All in all, this is a great coffee for folks who are looking for quality coffee in their local grocery store. I’m seriously impressed by the quality and the obvious effort by the roaster to make a great coffee available on the shelf and in large quantities.

From 6/14/14 to 7/4/14, Seattle’s Best House Blend is on special at Publix: Roast and Ground House Blend packaged coffee is just $4.99, and House Blend K-cup® Packs are $5.99.

I’ll be adding my own recipe later this week for a refreshing summer treat using Seattle’s Best House Blend ground coffee. For more recipes from the source visit the Seattle’s Best website www.SeattlesBest.com.
