Piper nv: Super Easy — Home Automation and Night Vision {w/ Giveaway} #MyPiper #PiperSecurity

June 26, 2015 by Lisa 16 Comments

Automate and Monitor your home with the Piper nv system

This is a sponsored post

I’ve been using the Piper nv for several weeks as an addition to my home security. We recently returned from our summer vacation and the Piper nv was added piece of mind to have while traveling. The Z-wave technology allowed me to connect other home automation processes, such as controlling lights, additional sensors monitoring doors and windows, not to mention night vision technology that allowed me to log in and check on my house, even at 3:00 a.m.

With Piper, You’re Always Home

The Piper nvis about the size of a soda can and connects to your smart phone via wi-fi. You can place it where you would like in your home, or use the adapter and mount it. This photo was taken when I was in Florida and had turned the lamp on in the living room using Piper. However, images taken using only the night vision feature were also crisp and clear.

Visual Impact with Night Vision and HD Camera

The resolution is great. While I’d love for it to have the clarity I have when I’m looking through my camera with a prime lens on it, the HD camera features a 180˚ iewing angle and a 3.4 megapixels. (The original Piper had a 2 megapixel camera.)

Home Vital Statistics

With Piper, I am able to log in and check on things at different times throughout the day, as well as turn lamps on and off, and not worry about an automatic switch or timer starting, or not turning off. Piper nv kept me alerted to temperature changes in my house, severe weather issues, and when my best friend forgot to set Piper nv to the home setting when she was in watering my plants I was sent a text message and video started recording.

This photo is a screen shot of my “Home Vitals” as monitored by the Piper nv. This is the past 48 hours in my home, showing temperature differences, changes in light, when people are moving, and spikes in sound.

 Two-Way Audio

It’s surreal checking on your home while you’re away and hearing the train chugging by as you sit in your hotel room far away from any train tracks. The two-way audio provided by Piper allowed me to check in and do not only a visual, but auditory check.

As you know, I have a teen and his favorite thing to do so far on his summer break is nothing whatsoever. When I’m in my office working, I like to open up my Piper nv app and use the two-way radio to talk to him. I’ll be honest with you, I normally start whispering his name to see if I can get his attention. It’s also brought a little relief while he’s cooking to make sure I’m not walking into a huge mess in the kitchen.

Stay connected with two-way audio on the Piper nv

What is Piper nv missing?

Not much. If your wifi was to go down while you’re away, your piper would not work. There is also no current way to export or access the data from the device. After checking their site, I couldn’t find anything about a public API, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen in the future. My husband is a big fan of the website “If-This-Then-That” and is hoping he’ll be able to integrate Piper into his IFTT automation scripts.

Would I buy Piper for myself?

Without a a doubt and there are more on the way for my home, along with sensors for every window, as well as more plugs for me to automate outlets in every room. All of these items connect together and are easily monitored and controlled by your smartphone or tablet.Win a Piper nv on A Daily Pinch

Securing your home during summer vacation with Piper nv

June 11, 2015 by Lisa 1 Comment

Piper nv {www.adailypinch.com}

Summer vacation season is upon us and everyone we know heads out of town for a much needed break from their busy lives. It’s difficult to enjoy a relaxing vacation when you are worried about what may be happening at home. My husband is obsessed with the idea of having a “fully connected home” and I knew that adding several of the Piper nv’s would help him achieve his dream while easing our travel fears.

What is Piper?

Piper is a home security and automation hub, allowing you to manage and connect with your home via your smartphone or tablet. It’s the perfect balance of security, video monitoring, and automation that will help make life safer and more convenient for you and your family. In a world where we are always “on”, Piper saves us money by negating the fee we would normally pay to a security company that alerts authorities if your alarm goes off too many times without just cause.

Piper nv automates and monitors your home {www.adailypinch.com}

According to a recent survey by Piper, only 1.64% percent of people used a security camera they set up themselves. After setting up the Piper nv in my home, I’m not sure why more aren’t using them for every day home security automation. Setup was painless, simple, and only took about five minutes.

The Piper nv($279) is about the size of a soda can and looks like a much sleeker, over-sized webcam. I have very bold white walls in my home and the glossy white (black is also available) Piper nv blends in seamlessly on my coffee nook (doesn’t everyone have a nook in their kitchen dedicated to hot beverages?). It came with brackets to mount it on the wall, a silver table stand, extra long cord, and a backup battery system.

stockmen

Like 11.19% of people surveyed, neighbors and a few caretakers will be checking on my home multiple times per day when we travel. While nothing is fool proof, knowing that I can check on my house with the Piper nv during times that I know they won’t be around gives me peace of mind. In case you’re wondering, it will be at 3 a.m. when I’m trying to sleep and my husband and son are snoring in our hotel room.

I have peace of mind knowing I can open the app on my phone or tablet at any time and check on my house with the Piper nv’s real time HD video. The 180 degree view allows me to browse different sections of my home while panning, tilting, and zooming in and out. Piper nv also alerts me, based on my own personal security rules and settings. Depending on what I have it set on, my neighbors, friends and family who are caring for my home while I am away are alerted as well.

My personal rules for vacation on the Piper nv

As you can see, my rules are set up so that my trusted circle is notified in multiple ways. (I asked their permission before adding them to all of the alerts.) If motion is detected in my house, the siren will turn on, as well as my lamps that connect to Piper via Z-wave.

What is Z-Wave?

Z-Wave is one of the home automation standards that exist for having devices talk to each other. I have connected my Piper nv with the Piper door and window sensors, as well as the automated switches.

I have connected Piper to multiple Z-wave tools, including Z-wave door and window sensors, as well as switches so I can turn different items on and off in my house.

Piper nv Siren

The Piper nv comes with a powerful 105 dB siren that goes off when a security mode is breached. I tested it in panic mode and scared myself silly. It was LOUD. How loud? Loud enough my neighbor came over to check on me. I’ll be quite honest with you, it’s loud enough to make your ears ring. I’m pretty sure The Who played at those levels back in the 70’s.

With the different settings for the siren, the Piper nv can be used quickly in panic mode, or set to vacation, away, and stay mode. There is even a setting for the siren to turn on if a loud noise happens in your home while you are away. The local CSX train tracks are behind my home and I am pretty sure the engineers blowing the whistle to alert people at the next crossing would set the Piper nv siren off. (I have been tempted to test this theory while my family is at home.)

How do you secure your home or apartment on vacation?

Fat Girl Walking by Brittany Gibbons: A Review

May 17, 2015 by Lisa Leave a Comment

This is supposed to be a book review of “Fat Girl Walking” by Brittany Gibbons which is coming out in stores and online Tuesday, May 19th. I’ve read it four times since Thursday, May 14. (I’m a freakishly fast reader.) But I don’t know how much of a review this is, as it is a soul searching look into myself. You see, Brittany has taken everything I have ever felt about being a fat girl walking down the street and scrubbed it with sandpaper until I am raw and pink. I feel like a newborn who has been shot out into the waiting arms of parents who soon realize they have given birth to an angry squirrel.

This book will lead you down into your own personal rabbit hole and it is a good thing. We either avoid our rabbit hole or we stay in it out of fear. I know where I stay and my rabbit hole is about as funky as the jeans you’ve been wearing for a week that can now stand on their own.

Fat Girl Walking by Brittany Gibbons

First things first, Brittany Gibbons is as honest and funny as the day is long. I sat on my front porch the first time I read “Fat Girl Walking.” My neighbors who were out for a walk moved to the other side of the street because they thought I was in the midst of a psychotic break, complete with tears streaming down my cheeks, red faced and gasping for air. A teenager with a middle-aged gay best friend who has a white cockatoo that swears in French and drinks lowball glasses of scotch would make Jim Dial crack a smile. (If you don’t know who Jim Dial is, go to YouTube and search for Jim Dial and Murphy Brown. Please don’t tell me if you have to. I’m afraid you’ll send me straight to my first Botox appointment and I’m not sure my accountant would let me deduct it off of my taxes.)

Gibbons relives her chilhood pain — her father’s accident, name calling from her peers, and cheerleader tryouts. She shares her struggles with anxiety and the physical and emotional affects it had on her as a child and as an adult. As she lets you into her head, you realize how much she is in yours. You find parts of you in her book and find yourself noddng along, wanting to curl up next to her so you can cry and heal.

It’s that life-changing book that you want to read. Because I learned something from Brittany Gibbons and I think it is the most important lesson in this book: I want to be the woman they adjust the shots for. While you won’t have full context for that statement until you have read the book, you will soon after. I have cried my eyes out, reading that line over and over, writing it on scraps of paper and sobbed it on my husband’s shoulder. (The mascara stains are going to be hell to get out of his white dress shirt.)

Personal take-aways from “Fat Girl Walking,” complete with inner monologue.

You’re not as thin as you think you are

It doesn’t matter how good you look today, on the internet, someone is going to take the wind out of your sails. That’s a nice way of saying they’re going either stop reading you or start calling you names. Most of the time, it’s both. Which is why I don’t put pictures of myself on the Internet, because believe me, you don’t want to see me looking like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man on my recent farm tours — it’s a sexy that only livestock appreciates, and then only if I am holding feed.

Can I be honest? I’m terrified. Of what you will think. What others will think. And I know that at the end of the day, it only matters what I think and how I feel, but when you’re 42, peri-menopausal, and are crying because there is a large zit in the middle of your giant forehead wrinkle, life gets confusing. Do I jump into a Slayer a mosh pit or sit in my rocking chair and complain about my aching lower back?

Taking Charge

Brittany’s second rule of being fat on the Internet is taking charge of your fat on the Internet. You’re in charge of your life and you have to set terms, whether they are for you, or for others.

That really is so much easier said that done and B has done it well. I’m terrified. Which is why I want to curl up under a duvet with her. Maybe I should just give her the password to my blog and let her go click publish on all of the posts I have sitting in draft about this subject.

The Fourth Trimester

Pregnancy does a number your body. I think we’d both like to know the real deal from Gisele and the rest of the Victoria Secret’s models who’ve given birth. They look great on the outside, but is their underwear hiding the multitude of pregnancy/childbirth induced problems our granny panties do?

Shut Up

While I don’t have a daughter, I found that what I do regarding my weight and figure affected my son as well. For all young ladies and gentlemen I encounter, there is no “F” word. That word is “fat.” I feel the other “F” word is much more respectable.

I also avoid self-deprcating humor regarding weight as it really bothers my son and husband.

Last Cake Ever

How many “tomorrow I will eat healthy” and then you get close and personal with your friend Sara Lee? The sugar crash is hell and Krispy Kreme has the “hot doughnuts now” sign on.

Fat Shaming

It is a real thing — which is why I’m still working up the guts to be a fat woman on the Internet. That being said, skinny shaming is just as bad. We are all real women.

Mollusks

I’ll never look at a scallop the same way again. Want to know why? You’ll find out in Chapter 8. In other news, snorting water forcefully up your nose from a highball glass would be a lot better if the salt from your neti pot was already mixed in.

ABOUT:

Fat Girl Walking isn’t a diet book. It isn’t one of those former fat people memoirs about how someone battled, and won, in the fight against fat. Brittany doesn’t lose all the weight and reveal the happy, skinny girl that’s been hiding inside her. Instead, she reminds us that being chubby doesn’t mean you’ll end up alone, unhappy, or the subject of a cable medical show. What’s important is learning to love your shape. With her infectious humor and soul-baring honesty, Fat Girl Walking reveals a life full of the same heartbreak, joy, oddity, awkwardness, and wonder as anyone else’s. Just with better snacks.

Brittany Gibbons is the author of the blog “Brittany, Herself,” a body image advocate, model, author, TED speaker, media personality, internet catalyst, curve flaunter, comedian, adult summer camp owner, fashion hoarder and eater of the cold Chinese take-out in the fridge.

Seattle’s Best House Blend Coffee — Finding #GreatTaste {Taste Test}

June 22, 2014 by Lisa Leave a Comment

Morning ritual of pouring cream into coffee

If you’ve been a reader here for any time, or follow me on Twitteror Pinterest, you’ll know all about my love of coffee. Not just any coffee, good coffee, preferably swirled with half and half to create a luscious dark blonde color. I wake up and fill my home with the warm smell and am instantly energized. While it was a no-brainer when Seattle’s Best reached out to me and asked if I would like to try the new Seattle’s Best House Blend, I was also cautious.

Morning ritual of pouring cream into coffee

Taste-testing a medium roast coffee made to be sold in grocery stores and suit a wide range of palates is a challenging prospect. As a self-proclaimed coffee aficionado, I’ve developed certain affinity for what I like in coffee. The deeper, darker the roast the better. I’m also not fond of quite a few regions of coffee — mainly because of some of the flavors they bring to the cup which I personally find unappealing.

I’m always up for a challenge, so I popped in at Publix, where Seattle’s Best is now available, and picked up a few bags (ok, 4) where it was on sale for the sweet price of $4.99 thru July 4, 2014. The k-cups was also on special for $5.99 so I picked a few of those up as well.

For the purposes of testing, I left off the half and half and did a traditional cupping at home to really test the coffee they’d sent me to purchase. The key things I was looking for are what you look for in any coffee:

Aroma:

  • Animal-like
  • Ashy
  • Burnt/Smoky
  • Chemical/Medicinal
  • Chocolate like
  • Caramel
  • Cereal/Malted/Toast-like
  • Earthy
  • Floral
  • Fruity/Citrus
  • Grass/Green/Herbal
  • Nutty
  • Rancid/Rotten
  • Rubber like
  • Spicy
  • Tobacco
  • Winey
  • Woody

Tastes:

  • Acidity
  • Bitterness
  • Sweetness
  • Saltiness
  • Sourness

Mouthfeel:

  • Body
  • Astringency

I made Seattle’s Best House Blend coffee as a pour-over and a French Press to taste test properly. However, for the sake of the everyday coffee consumer, I brewed a pot with traditional brewing methods (2 tablespoons to every 6 ounces of cold water) in my drip coffee maker — a Cuisinart with a thermal carafe — the results of which I’m sharing here. Finally, I made their cold brew method (recipe below) to create a proper iced coffee at home. None of these tests was done with any sweetener or cream, just pure coffee. Seattle's Best Coffee

Aroma: The aromas I picked up on, along with my husband, were:

  • Chocolate like — This wasn’t a sweet chocolate taste, but something akin to a 70% cocao flavor
  • Caramel — Light
  • Fruity/Citrus — I picked up grapefruit, but a more experienced taster would know for sure
  • Grassy
  • Winey
  • Woody – I’m wanting to say this was somewhat oakey. It reminds me of good bourbon that contains a higher rye content.

Tastes:

  • Acidity — The Seattle’s Best House Blend is well balanced coffee with good acidity on the tongue. It doesn’t leave a sour taste, key to a well-balanced coffee.
  • Bitterness — Light bitterness is apparent, but that’s not a bad thing. If it were an overwhelming bitterness, I wouldn’t have been able to drink this coffee as I’m very sensitive to bitter.
  • Sweetness — I didn’t find any off-flavors in this coffee, which allowed the sweet flavors (chocolate/caramel/fruit) to shine.
  • Saltiness — Normal coffee drinkers won’t look for salt. I do, but this is almost a sea salt taste.
  • Sourness — People often confuse sourness with acidity. There was no sourness in this coffee, just great acidity.

Mouthfeel:

  • Body — Seattle’s Best House Blend has a great body. I let the coffee sit on my tongue and roll around in my mouth. It was bold, robust, satisfying.
  • Astringency — None. Astringent coffees leave undesirable after-taste consisting of a dry feeling on the tongue when you’re done drinking them. The Seattle’s Best House Blend left a pleasant flavor

Take-Away:

Seattle’s Best House Blend coffee was consistent across all tastings. Some of the methods I used for brewing intensified the flavors, making a much more robust cup. While I will still be drinking my darker roasts, Seattle’s Best House Blend is definitely a coffee I’m going to recommend to my mother, family and friends. (My mother in particular, as she’s happy with her brand, which I find personally find intolerable. Hi Mom!)

The only con for me in this whole experience is the actual grind of the beans. I prefer to grind my own beans in a burr grinder, and the grind is too fine to do a truly great French Press. This won’t stop me from keeping a bag of Seattle’s Best House Blend on hand for visitors who like a milder coffee for their morning cup. (Seriously.)

All in all, this is a great coffee for folks who are looking for quality coffee in their local grocery store. I’m seriously impressed by the quality and the obvious effort by the roaster to make a great coffee available on the shelf and in large quantities.

From 6/14/14 to 7/4/14, Seattle’s Best House Blend is on special at Publix: Roast and Ground House Blend packaged coffee is just $4.99, and House Blend K-cup® Packs are $5.99.

Recipes:

Seattle's Best Iced Coffee Recipe

I’ll be adding my own recipe later this week for a refreshing summer treat using Seattle’s Best House Blend ground coffee. For more recipes from the source visit the Seattle’s Best website www.SeattlesBest.com.

Outsmarting the Christmas Present Shaker with Don’t Shake It

December 16, 2013 by Lisa 2 Comments

Don't Shake it - For Keeping Nosy Nellie's Away from packages under the tree.

I live with a snoop. He can’t handle Christmas presents actually being wrapped and under the tree because surprises stink, and he wants to know NOW! That’s right folks, I’m talking about my husband. This year, the proverbial goose is cooked, thanks to the folks over at Don’t Shake it.

Don’t Shake It is sound effects for gifts. They come in pre-recorded and recordable inserts you slip into the packages prior to wrapping. Every time someone moves or shakes a gift, Don’t Shake It is activated and let’s the offender know they’ve been caught red-handed.

Don't Shake it - For Keeping Nosy Nellie's Away from packages under the tree.

My current favorite is “breaking glass”, because the look on faces when they are shaking a pair of gloves is priceless. It’s deer in the headlights meets toddler with hand in the cookie jar. Belly laughs are guaranteed due to the unsuspecting victims and their reactions.

Christmas is definitely more entertaining around these parts. I’ll be using Don’t Shake It for quite some time.

Don’t Shake It retails for $4.95 each or $20.95 for a pack of five.

Disclosure: Don’t Shake It sent me samples to facilitate this review. The only other compensation I’ve received was the look on my husband’s face when he thought he’d broke a present. That is priceless.
