Men 10 Essential Skills: A Review

August 29, 2011 by Lisa Leave a Comment

My husband grabbed the review copy I was sent of Men 10 Essential Skills: The Professional’s Guide and told me he would be happy to review. Fantastic! What did he learn?

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

Funny how we all read, tweet and recite the first sentence of that quote, but we ignore or forget the rest of it. The first sentence is easy to think about; it expresses a feeling. A mood.

The second is all about putting that mood into action. It involves risk. Uncertainty. Questions. Doubt.

One way to lessen your doubts about doing something new is to acquire new skills. That’s where RVR’s book “MEN 10 Essential Skills” comes in. A short, simple to read book that covers a variety of skills that a man could use depending on the situation.

Because, let’s face it: many of us Gen-X & Gen-Y dads didn’t have our own dads around to teach us as many things as we’d hoped. But now that we are older and we may be confronted with situations that take us out of our own comfort zones, learning how to do new things can make these situations easier to deal with.

I found the book useful. While I didn’t find much in the book that was new or unknown to me, there were some things in the book that I thought might be interesting to try. Like tying a new tie knot. I tried RVR’s knot in the book and I don’t think it came out too shabby.

But don’t take my word for it, judge for yourself. This is what you’d expect in a book for guys: short, gets to what you need to know without a lot of fuss.

And now if you’ll excuse me, I have to hone my abilities on skills 7 & 9: Catching waves and making Vesper Martinis.

You can buy Men 10 Essential Skills: The Professional’s Guide online and in your local bookstores.
