The Charlotte “Boo-Tox Bash” is October 30 — Hosted by Dermatology, Laser & Vein Specialists of the Carolinas

October 18, 2014 by Lisa Leave a Comment

"Boo-Tox" Bash at Dermatology, Laser and Vein Specialists of the Carolinas

Disclosure: This post was not sponsored, but I’m pretty sure my friend Marcia will bestow lots of love and kisses upon me for sharing.

Dermatology, Laser & Vein Specialists of the Carolinas will hold its 7th annual “Boo-Tox” Bash on Thursday, October 30, at its Charlotte office located at 1918 Randolph Road, Suite 550 from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. What is a “Boo-Tox” bash? Well, it’s your chance to try Botox or Xeomin injections for the first time, or if you’re an old pro, to save some money while supporting a good cause. To add to the fun, staff members will be dressed in costumes, and the office will feature a ‘spooky’ decor. Patients are welcome to dress up for the fun or the confidentiality!

"Boo-Tox" Bash at Dermatology, Laser and Vein Specialists of the Carolinas

At the “Boo-Tox Bash,” a Botox® or Xeomin® injection will cost only $8.99 per unit, compared to the regular price of $14. Anyone who brings a friend who buys at the same time will pay just $8.00 per unit for each. Do you hear the wheels in my head spinning? I’m calculating what it would cost to relax my Crowe’s Feet and forehead lines.

Botox injections have grown increasingly popular in the U.S. with more than 6.1 million   performed in doctors’ offices in 2012, and men a growing part of that number. In fact, the decade of 2000 – 2010 is referred to as the “Brotox Decade” with the use of Botox by men increases 258%, according the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Furthermore, Botox Cosmetic was the most popular cosmetic treatment chosen by men in 2010 — beating both hair restoration and liposuction — treatments historically more popular among the male population.

But what about the risks of discounted Botox deals I’ve read about in the news? This bash is different. Patients are encouraged to call and schedule in advance. (Walk-ins are welcome as available.) Five board-certified staff physicians will be on hand to perform services. You’re not being injected by someone at a party in a home, you’re still in a medical setting and will be treated as if you had set up an appointment during normal business operating hours. Clinical and spooky at the same time!

With my birthday coming up in a few weeks, I am fully aware I’m a woman of a certain age. Yes friends, I’m (sort of) mid-life and proud of it. However, I’m also quite aware that’s it’s almost time to start doing a little extra maintenance on my face. Yet, I’ve always been put off by the cost, so I did a little research and found out people no longer need view non-surgical cosmetic treatments as a frightening experience or be afraid of the cost. During this event, women – and men – can visit the office for a one-stop day of beauty, purchasing services at substantial discounts and having them performed during the same visit.

Charlotte Radiology, Breast Cancer Awareness and Friends — 2014

September 20, 2014 by Lisa Leave a Comment

Amanda -- Breast Cancer Warrior

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. I always love and hate to see this month come around due to the increase in discussions around breast cancer and heightened awareness. My friend Amanda is currently in her battle against breast cancer, and it is a battle. She’s a warrior; except her battle is being fought as she’s hooked up to bags of poison that kill the good and bad cells in her body while she tries to keep herself healthy so she can go for the next round. Have I mentioned she is doing all of this while parenting two very active daughters and trying to be who she is — Amanda.

Amanda -- Breast Cancer Warrior

Amanda — It’s Me, Amanda

On a sad note, earlier this year we lost my sister-in-law, Sandi, to stage four breast cancer. She was just as heroic as Amanda, but her body couldn’t fight anymore. The disease moved to her liver and we lost her after a five year battle. This is where I turn into Forrest Gump — “that’s all I have to say about that.”

1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.

Locally, as you all know, I’m a big supporter of Charlotte Radiology and the steps they take every year to bring awareness to the fight against breast cancer and raise funds during the month of October. For the seventh consecutive year, Charlotte Radiology’s theme is the “1-in-8” breast cancer awareness campaign. The name stems from the statistic that one in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer during her lifetime.

“Educating women about breast health is our constant mission,” said Michelle Russell, breast services marketing manager. “But every October, we get another opportunity to educate the whole community on the lifesaving potential of mammography. As long as the 1-in-8 statistic stands, we will do all we can to promote proactive breast health. At the same time, we use the month to raise funds to help take care of local women whose treatment may require financial assistance.”

Estimated New Female Breast Cancer Cases and Deaths By Age

Charlotte Radiology is planning several community events throughout the month. A portion of proceeds from all events will benefit Carolinas Breast Cancer Fund, a Levine Cancer Institute initiative that increases access to life-saving mammography screenings and follow-up care for uninsured women. Donations to Carolinas Breast Cancer Fund make possible Free Mammography Days in targeted underserved populations.

Community events this October include:

·       Pink Pint Night is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 1 from 4 to 8 p.m.at NoDa Brewing Company (2229 N.Davidson). The public is invited – no reservations required – to this special kickoff event, which features live music, food trucks and a special pink brew. There will also be a raffle with prizes from YETI, Lululemon, Aveda and more. A portion of all proceeds will go to Carolinas Breast Cancer Fund.

·       Observe the Pink is The Charlotte Observer’s contribution to the awareness campaign, and Charlotte Radiology is a sponsor of the second annual event. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, The Observer parking lot (600 S. Tryon St.) will be home to a food truck rally featuring some of the area’s most popular food trucks, like Juan Taco, Comfort Foods, and Papa Libretto’s. The event will also feature games and raffles, local sports mascots and the Charlotte Radiology specially designed Bras and “1-in-8” Pink Ladies, whose pink and white costuming illustrates the breast cancer statistic.

·       Paint it Pink, in partnership with Wine & Design, will be on Monday, Oct. 13 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery. The public is invited to join in creating a special pink Charlotte painting – lead by Wine & Design’s talented artist. The cost is $35 per person, which will include the painting and complimentary drink from OMB. Reservations and pre-payment is required athttp://www.wineanddesign. com/Charlotte.

Charlotte Radiology has launched several initiatives in 2014 that expand service offerings and provide greater access to lifesaving screening tests for women unable to pay for those services.

·       The group will be opening a new breast center – its 14th – on September 23 in Prosperity Crossing in north Charlotte to meet the demands of that growing region. The Prosperity Crossing Medical Plaza Breast Center offers screening mammography (including tomosynthesis/3D mammography) and bone density scans – imaging technology that uses low amounts of X-ray energy to detect the presence of osteoporosis. Like all Charlotte Radiology Breast Centers, the center is accredited by the American College of Radiology, certified by the FDA and recognized as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.

·       From January through July 2014, Charlotte Radiology’s two mobile mammography centers, which debuted in 2011, have logged 14,227 miles and screened 4,843 patients in North and South Carolina. (In addition, a mobile unit sponsored by Belk and staffed by Charlotte Radiology has reached 2,263 patients in seven states this year. That unit has traveled 26,351 miles in 2014 alone.)

·       The newest technology in breast cancer detection – tomosynthesis – was added to breast centers in Monroe, Huntersville and Pineville. “Tomo,” an exam performed on state-of-the-art digital equipment takes multiple low-dose images of a compressed breast from different angles, will soon be made available at the Prosperity Crossing, Ballantyne and SouthPark Breast Centers by end of the year. Since launching tomo in 2013, Charlotte Radiology’s call-back rates – for “false positives” – have already dropped to 7.7 percent from an average of 10 percent.

Tomosynthesis is performed at the same time as a traditional 2D mammogram. It’s on the same scanner with no noticeable difference in the experience or time involved for the patient.

In October, Charlotte Radiology will support various events that support the fight against breast cancer, including Ballantyne Country Club’s Rally for the Cure, Charlotte Latin School’s Serve for the Cure, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Tickled Pink and American Cancer Society Making Strides. For details and a list of all 1-in-8 campaign activities, please visit www.beatcancercr.com

Charlotte Premium Outlets — Discount, High End Fashion in My Backyard

July 30, 2014 by Lisa Leave a Comment

Kate Spade at Charlotte Premium Outlets

Tonight I headed over to the Charlotte Premium Outlets for a tweet-up with some of the very fashionable in the Charlotte community. We were able to catch up, have a quick glass of wine and then tour the outlets with the marketing director. There are a few things I know about me: 1) I’m a reasonable woman, 2) I’m frugal, 3) These outlets could create problems with numbers one and two.

The Charlotte Premium Outlets (CPO from here on out) will house 100 upscale outlet stores. All I can say to this is “Hello Kate Spade NY Outlet that’s finally within driving distance, OMG, LET ME BUY ALL THE THINGS!” If you don’t know me personally, then you have no idea I own a collection of Kate Spade handbags and accoutrements which I’ve collected over the years. (I tend to buy the classics in the regular boutiques and more trendy, discounted items at the outlet.)

Kate Spade at Charlotte Premium Outlets

There is also a wide variety to suit everyone, including apparel, footwear, fashion accessories, leather goods, home furnishings (some of us have previously mentioned we’re building a house — luckily for me and CPO, my husband rarely reads this blog and will not know the plans I have, nor the visits I shall be making) and specialty brands.

Coastal Court

After touring this evening, I can say CPO is the nicest outlet mall I’ve ever been too — and I’ve visited quite a few in my day friends. Designed to reflect the history of Charlotte and its namesake, Queen Charlotte, the balcony overlooking the main courtyard, heavy banister railing, and the towers in the end cap spaces are all modern twists on key features during her lifetime. Even the lighting resembles the late 1700’s with yellow lights in the wall sconces featured throughout the property.
Sass at the Kate Spade Outlet!
Unlike other outlet malls, there’s plenty of covered walking space for you to worry about not getting wet when it rains. And if it does start raining, pop into the Market Hall for casual dining options and sit in comfort until the weather has let up. If you’re not into shopping, there are plenty of seats sitting outside for you to relax — all of which are soft seating lounge chairs and sofas. I tested one out and it was so comfortable, I could have napped quite easily.

Harry's Chicken Salad -- Oh So Good!

CPO is also family friendly, with six family restrooms and three nursing stations. While I only shop in fits and starts, I’m happy knowing 900 new jobs were created for the Charlotte area with the opening of CPO. Sure, traffic is going to be a little sketchy on 485 while we all adjust to the added influx of cars, but I’m pretty sure it will even out soon. But that’s okay, I know a super secret back way to get in avoiding all the traffic — if you ask nicely I might give you directions.

Post Secret Performance Dates

Secrets are the currency of intimacy. Sharing your most intimate thoughts and secrets with the world is a scary. PostSecretfounder, Frank Warren, created his site as a safe haven for people to send in their secrets anonymously on the back of a postcard. With half a billion visitors, half a million anonymous secrets received and the release of 5 bestselling books, artist, curator and internet phenomenon Frank Warren has put together a team of theatre professionals to bring life to the unheard voices of PostSecret. With the bravery of RENT and the surprising honesty of The Vagina Monologues, PostSecret The Show is a breakthrough in audience sourced storytelling that reaches beyond the confines of the stage, reminding audiences that no matter what you may be facing, you are not alone.

Local Love: Hoops Madness Benefits Families in Need

January 13, 2014 by Lisa Leave a Comment

The Mitchell Bays Turner Pediatric Fund

March Madness is when we normally think about little else but the NCAA Men’s Division 1 Basketball Championship. This year, it will be providing the backdrop to help families facing the financial hardship of a child’s illness. Hoops Madness is an effort inspired by one little boy’s own battle against cancer.

Meg McElwain and Frank Turner III of Charlotte established the fund in 2012 in honor of their son, Mitchell Bays Turner, who was diagnosed at three months old with a rare form of infant leukemia.

“We’ve been inspired by Mitchell’s courage, and by so many other families we’ve met at Presbyterian who are facing their child’s illness with strength and hope. This fund expresses our admiration for them, and seeks to provide tangible help. As Mitchell and other children battle as hard as they can, Hoops Madness gives us a chance to support them, enjoy college basketball and provide comfort through our time together.

“Those of us with sick children, we’re family now.”

Hoops Madness for Mitchell’s Fund will take place from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery. Featuring family-friendly party centered around the NCAA basketball tournament,  Hoops Madness will offer a silent auction, live raffle and basketball free throw shooting contests. (Don’t forget about the Big Dance, the games will be on the TV’s as well!)

All money raised will go to support the financial needs of pediatric patients and their families during treatment at Presbyterian Hemby Children’s Hospital.

Hoops Madness Ticket Information:

Individual tickets are $75 and include all food and drink. Other opportunities to support Mitchell’s Fund include sponsorships and donations of silent auction and raffle items. Details, and a chance to support the cause, are at www.mitchellsfund.org.

Olde Mecklenburg Brewery is located at 215 Southside Drive off Old Pineville Road.

About The Mitchell Bays Turner Pediatric Fund

The Mitchell Bays Turner Pediatric Fund supports the needs of pediatric patients and their families during treatment at Presbyterian Healthcare. Meg McElwain and Frank Turner, III, established the fund in 2012 in honor of their son, Mitchell Bays Turner, who was diagnosed at 3 months with Infant Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. The fund serves as a way to support families in need that are facing challenging pediatric diagnoses and helps address the need for education and advocacy to the community at large on what the families of pediatric patients face, and how to give back.

About Presbyterian Healthcare

Presbyterian Healthcare is affiliated with Novant Health, a not-for-profit healthcare system caring for patients in North and South Carolina and Virginia. Presbyterian is made up of physician clinics and five hospitals: Presbyterian Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital Matthews, Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville, Presbyterian Orthopaedic Hospital and Presbyterian Hemby Children’s Hospital. The hospital system is recognized as a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular, cancer, orthopaedic, stroke and women’s health conditions. Presbyterian Hospitals achieved national nursing magnet status, a designation that only five percent of all hospitals nationwide have earned based on nursing care quality. Novant Health and Presbyterian have been named winners of the national Codman Award, presented by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, for excellence in improving the quality and safety of health care.
