May Designs — Pretty. Simple.

September 22, 2014 by Lisa Leave a Comment

May Designs

If you’ve followed me here for any length of time, you’ll know I’m very picky about the paper I write on. But Lisa, you’re a blogger? Yes, I am. But I also write a great deal offline in various sundry notebooks, as well as keep a paper planner. May Designssent me a sample knowing I couldn’t resist the allure of pretty notebooks and quality paper.

May Designs

Mica May started May Designs because she was tired of ugly notebooks. I just want to tell her “We all are, girl. We all are.” As a self-proclaimed font freak with a Pantone crush, she knew what she had to do. About a year after college, she launched a boutique graphic design firm. Clients of her design firm took notice of the stylish notebooks she always carried and May Designs was born.

Don’t you love these new Watercolor designs below?

If you want to personalize cards, notebooks, stationary, or gift cards with Mica’s gorgeous designs, you’ll find the most difficult part of the process is selecting from the gorgeous designs. I’ve created a few to share here, but again, the true test of the product is to have it in your hands. May Designs uses top quality paper that is going to work with any pen or pencil in your arsenal.

Disclosure: I was sent a notebook from May Designs some months ago. That one has been filled to the brim and I’ve bought quite a few more since that time and see many more in my future.

Navy — My color of the moment

September 10, 2013 by Lisa Leave a Comment

Texture of navy blue fiber paper with torn edges.

Navy is my color of the moment and may be on the way to being my signature color. To say I’m somewhat obsessed with it is an understatement. I’m looking at clothes, household items, accessories, paint, nail polish you name it, I want it in navy. Maybe it’s because I’ve always loved the color blue in general, but there is something about navy I find so elegant, yet edgy.

Navy has a colorful history

The color navy draws its name from the colors of the British Royal Navy uniform. Initially it was called marine blue, yet comes in many different shades. Some consider it to be a shade of black, but if you pick up the navy blue Crayola Crayon, it’s a much more vibrant shade.

I’m always going between conservative and modern in all aspects of life, and navy is a color which flows between both beautifully. I love how I can add colors, like hot pink, apple green, bright yellow, or mint and create a striking balance. Earlier this year, I was trying to talk my mother into doing striking navy blue cabinets in her house, but she turned my idea down. I still think they’d look fantastic with glossy white trim.

Navy certainly isn’t for everyone. It’s a strong color symbolizing spirit, devotion, and religious study. Blue induces calm and peace within, especially darker shares of blue. This is probably why I’m drawn to it. I’m drawn to quiet contemplation, calm, and peace.

What is your color?

Minted: Inspiration from Exceptional Design

February 12, 2013 by Lisa Leave a Comment

a greenhouse affair by kayla king at minted

Stationery and paper stores grab my attention. Even in the digital world, I still prefer paper as my medium of choice. I’m also a firm believer in the hand-written thank you note. Minted, a global community of independent graphic designers and an online store that prints and sells the best of their designs in the form of paper goods has pushed my obsession one step further.

In this day and time of mass commercialism, I love that I can go to Minted and find unique products not available in every big box store popping up on each corner to select products that are uniquely me. Mintedproducts will find their way into your most personal celebrations. That’s why they only use fine paper stock, rich inks, and crisp printing methods.

I’m currently obsessed with the Minted Inspiration Boards. When I landed on the Wedding Inspiration Boards, I could do nothing but sit and sigh for what seemed to be hours. I love the careful thought the designers (and real people like me, who play at being designers) have put into each board and if I had space, would share each and every one here.

What’s great about the Inspiration boards at Minted is that it’s a community effort. They uncover great design by ongoing competition and if your design is selected to sell, you receive a portion from each sale of your product.

Personally, I’m working on creating a board for my Grandmother’s 80th birthday in April. We’re having a party for her and I can think of no better way to share ideas with my family than an Inspiration board.

“We guess you could say that quality is an obsession for us. We stand behind our products with a 100% satisfaction guarantee.”

I’m obsessed as well. Have you developed a Minted obsession yet?

I received a gift card from Minted to try their products, but all opinions are my own. Images courtesy of Minted.

These are fun but I’d like them better without the pop-punk cartoon skull and crossbones.

I’m all for color and I’m not opposed to redesigning classic pieces, but I have to admit these are the ugliest cuckoo clocks I’ve ever seen.

While traditional Cuckoo clocks are not my thing, this one, by Stefan Strumbel, could fit the bill quite nicely. It’s fun, edgy and girly all at the same time. Plus, the kitsch factor is off the charts!
