5 Fun Craft Ideas Using Scotch Expressions to Make a Birthday Special

I love Washi Tape. I love it so much, I own more than any one human should. These little rolls of tape allow me to change the decor in my home, without breaking the bank, with fun designs I create myself. Using tape, I was able to create a special birthday surprise for a visiting friend. How far has my obsession gone? I’d washi tape my husband’s forehead if he’d let me. Thanks to Office Depot and 3M, I was able to amass quite a collection at once.  What is Washi Tape?

Washi Tape is beautiful paper tape, that is actually very sturdy and can be as strong as duct tape.  As someone who is quite the duct tape aficionado, washi tape was the perfect addition to complement my adhesive ninja skills. Made from natural fibers, mainly from the bark of trees native to Japan — the mulberry, the gampi tree, and the mitsumata shrub — washi tape is functional, pretty and useful all over the house.

I had a girlfriend coming over for cupcakes and coffee for her birthday, and decided to play with my washi collection and create a unique surprise for her visit. By adding the tape strategically on the plate, I could create a quick design that made the yummy Blackberry Lemon Cupcake look balanced and even more delectable. The flag was created very simply by wrapping washi tape around the end of a chopstick I snipped and trimmed with an X-Acto knife.

Since I wanted to add flowers to my table top, I decided to add some color to one of the pieces in my milk glass collection. It’s a lovely, but nondescript, bud vase I felt would look fantastic with a little added oomph. This particular piece was decorated with 3m Expressions Magic Tape. The same one we use to wrap gifts with. Due to the unique indentions on the vase, it took a little extra time, as I had to make sure it was smoothed into each section.

Finally, I needed cards and a bag for a gift. By using washi, masking and duct tape, (along with a little paint on one card), I was able to create gorgeous cards and upcycle a sad gift bag, all with tape!
